Summer activities continue at SCLD libraries in August

Spokane, WA | July 23, 2026 – Spokane County Library District (SCLD) announces August library events, workshops, and activities. Creative programs include robots, sound effects, and activities and crafts. Other events include a geology walk, fresh produce swaps, and workshops for making food and drink. Summer isn’t over yet, and SCLD invites the community to explore events and activities at its libraries.

All Ages & Adults

During the Medical Lake Geo-Walk & Water Sampling (adults, teens & tweens), walkers can hear about the lake’s history and natural science. Walkers also assist in gathering water samples for stormwater research and picking up trash along the way.

Produce Swaps (all ages) start up in August at six SCLD libraries. Bring fresh produce from home gardens and take home something different from another garden. Three workshops share insights into making delicious food and drink. Learn how to make beef jerky, sourdough bread, and kombucha (adults).

Topics for Dementia Caregivers Workshops (adults) held weekly at North Spokane Library in August include Local Dementia Resources, Emergency Situations, Care in Mid- and Late-Stage Dementia, and End-of-Life Conversations.

Gain valuable insights and practical tips, including how to identify ideal customers, create compelling calls to action, avoid retail turnoffs and pitfalls, adjust prices strategically, optimize coupon offers, and maximize holiday sales.

Kids & Teens

Meet Cedar the Highland Cow & Her Calf Clover, Mascot of the 75th Interstate Fair (ages 4+ & their families) and hear the story of Cedar’s first year of life, told by author Honey Louise Smith. Cedar and Clover will also be available for photo opportunities and petting.

For the first time, Mini Camp Read-a-Rama is taking place at Airway Heights and Deer Park Libraries, for kids entering grades 2–5. Kids get to read and explore children’s books, and then the books’ themes are used for camp activities. When kids make reading part of their summer, they are set up for success in the coming school year.
For any who loves robots but isn’t technically inclined, Hebocon is something to check out. Hebocon 2026: The Junky Robot Competition (ages 10–14) is a one-day workshop to create a robot from assorted junk and gadgets and then battle robots against each other in a sumo-style match.

Twist knobs, layer effects, and transform voices and everyday noises with reverb, delay, distortion, and more. Audio FX: Make Some Noise (ages 10–14) is a hands-on program that lets participants experiment and create sound in new ways.

Summer Reading activities also continue at SCLD libraries through August, including I SURVIVED: The Invasion of the Library, 2026, Dog Man Supa’ Adventures: Activities & Crafts, Cookie Decorating, Bedazzled Books: Diamond Art Covers, and Introduction to Watercolors.
